Image The Word of God

The day the Lord saved me, I read the Bible for the first time, and I understood it, and I couldn’t put it down! It was like a treasure to me! It was a ‘Good News for Modern Man’ paperback New Testament and I used a yellow highlighter throughout it. I was in college and it was marked more than my textbooks, and I read it more!

            I started reading the King James Bible just 7 years ago- read all the newer translations for over 25 years; so I know where you are coming from if you don’t read the King James Bible. I believed what people told me, too. But, the Lord used the other versions to feed me even though they were much less than 100% of God’s true word. What a difference in my life now! I love to read the Bible even more now. The Lord is revealing Himself to me every minute I study His Word. If you really want to know the true God, read the Bible! But don’t settle for less than perfect; the King James is God’s pure, preserved word in English.   This chapter contains verses about God’s word; all those with the following phrases that refer to God’s word;

~~The phrase ‘the word of God’ occurs 45 times in the KJV Bible.

The phrase ‘the word of the Lord came’ occurs 92 times in the KJV Bible; ‘the word of the Lord came unto me, saying’ occurs 42 times.

~~The phrase ‘according to the word of the Lord’ occurs 28 times in the KJV Bible; a reference to things that came to pass, as God said they would.

~~24 verses in the KJV Bible have the words ‘the word of the Lord’ and ‘the prophet’ in the same verse; noting how often the Lord spoke by his prophets.

So, as is my habit, I will just share from the Bible. This chapter is about the Word of God. My prayer is that this chapter will challenge you to read God’s Word for yourself, and that He will reveal Himself and His will to you more each time you read! God bless you!

            Jesus Christ is the Word: John 1:1 (KJV) 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:14 (KJV) 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. So the Lord and His word are the same thing.

            So, for me, I know when I read and study the Bible, the Lord will reveal Himself to me. The Word is the Lord Jesus Christ, as the previous scriptures ascertain. So, if you want to know the Lord, read His word. If you want the Lord to talk to you, read His Word. In fact, whatever you need will be found in the pages of God’s pure word.

2 Timothy 2:15-16 (KJV) 15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. ~~’vain babblings’ in this context, would mean talk that brings ungodliness, and anything that is not from the ‘word of truth’.

Proverbs 30:5-6 (KJV)
5 Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.
6 Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar. Then why did people not heed these words? When people made new ‘translations’ it was a direct violation of these verses.

Mark 7:13 (KJV)
13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.
Yet how many churches do things out of tradition, rather than because God’s word says to do them? In fact, they elevate their traditions above the Bible. The Catholic church actually has, as part of its doctrine, that the word of the Pope is greater than the Bible.

Luke 3:2 (KJV)
2 Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. ~~often God has spoken to His people in the wilderness.

Luke 4:3-4 (KJV)
3 And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.
4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

Luke 5:1 (KJV)
1 And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret,
People wanted to hear what Jesus had to say!

We are to sow God’s word…not money, as false teachers say.

Luke 8:11-15 (KJV)
11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 12 Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.
~~And this is always the devil’s plan, to keep us from hearing and believing God’s word.
13 They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. ~~When you hear the word, it will be tested.~~ 14 And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection. ~~If we get caught up in the things of this life more than reading and believing God’s word, we will ‘bring no fruit to perfection’~~.15 But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.

When God’s word is planted in good ground, on those who have an honest and good heart, they will;

 1. Hear the word

 2. Keep it

3. Bring forth fruit

We are in Jesus’ family if:    Luke 8:21 (KJV) 21 And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.~~ God will always give us grace to obey His word.

Luke 11:28 (KJV)
28 But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

Jesus equates the word of God with the law, and calls it scripture, and says it cannot be broken;

John 10:34-35 (KJV) 34 Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?
35 If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;

The first sign of the believers being filled with the Holy Ghost, was speaking the word of God:Acts 4:31 (KJV) 31 And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.

As God’s word spread, people got saved and added to the church: Acts 6:7 (KJV)
7 And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.

People became Christians and this was equated with receiving the word of God: Acts 8:13-14 (KJV)
13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done. 14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: Acts 11:1 (KJV) 1 And the apostles and brethren that were in Judaea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God.

The word of God grew and multiplied following signs and miracles;  Acts 12:23-24 (KJV) 23 And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost. 24 But the word of God grew and multiplied.

Acts 13:5 (KJV) 5 And when they were at Salamis, they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews: and they had also John to their minister. ~~They didn’t go to seminary, or give some power point sermon, etc. but preached the word of God.

Acts 13:7 (KJV) 7 Which was with the deputy of the country, Sergius Paulus, a prudent man; who called for Barnabas and Saul, and desired to hear the word of God. Acts 13:43-44 (KJV) 43 Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God. 44 And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.

When people reject the word of God, they reject eternal life: Acts 13:46 (KJV) 46 Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles. Also called the ‘word of the Lord’, Acts 13:47-49 (KJV) 47 For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth. 48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed. 49 And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region.

The Lord spoke to Paul not to be afraid, and to speak His word; Acts 18:9-11 (KJV) 9 Then spake the Lord to Paul in the night by a vision, Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace: 10 For I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee: for I have much people in this city. 11 And he continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them. ~~Paul didn’t go to Bible college, but taught the word of God.

True repentance, causes God’s word to grow mightily and prevail; Acts 19:18-20 (KJV) 18 And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds. 19 Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. 20 So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.

An often misquoted verse; the true meaning of faith is trust in the word of God;Romans 10:16-17 (KJV) 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? 17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

2 Corinthians 2:14-17 (KJV)
14 Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.
15 For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:
16 To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?
17 For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.

2 Corinthians 4:2 (KJV) 2 But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God. ~~Handling God’s word deceitfully would be what the devil did from the beginning when he asked Eve ‘hath God said?’ It is what all those have done who changed the original English Bible, KJV, too. It is what the health, wealth, prosperity teachers do too; twisting Bible verses to make them support their greed. Just believe what the Bible says, and don’t take parts of verses out of context, or put your own opinion in and cite where the verse is. The more you can share with others from the Bible, the more you will point them to the true God of the Bible.

Ephesians 6:17 (KJV) 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: ~~The Bible is our sword, our weapon which we should always have ready to use!

We must believe the Bible is the word of God; 1 Thessalonians 2:13 (KJV) 13 For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe. ~~The Word of God effectually works in those who believe.

In context, the word of God and prayer will keep us from doctrines of devils; the word of God sanctifies

  1 Timothy 4:1-5 (KJV) 1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:
5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

2 Timothy 2:8-10 (KJV) 8 Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel: 9 Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound. 10 Therefore I endure all things for the elect’s sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

Christian wives are to obey their husbands so as not to blaspheme the word of God; Titus 2:3-5 (KJV) 3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; 4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

Hebrews 4:12-13 (KJV) 12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

Hebrews 6:4-6 (KJV) 4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, 5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, 6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

The worlds were framed by the word of God;  Hebrews 11:3 (KJV) 3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

Hebrews 13:7-8 (KJV) 7 Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.
8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

1 Peter 1:23 (KJV)23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

The word of God keeps everything under control; 2 Peter 3:5-7 (KJV) 5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: 6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: 7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

Be strong, let the word of God abide in you, and you overcome the enemy: 1 John 2:14 (KJV)
14 I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one. The next verse says not to love the world, which is in direct opposition to the word of God; 1 John 2:15-17 (KJV) 15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

            Christians have been persecuted and martyred for the word of God throughout history, all through the Bible. Yet the real truth is that a person was never martyred for the two codices of the Sinaiticus and Vaticanus or Alexandrian text-type  {the origin of the Catholic and all other Bibles, besides the KJV}. But the martyrs were killed for their believe in the Textus Receptus, the source of the original word of God, the King James Bible. Anyway, here is what the Bible says:

The word of God is the revelation of Jesus Christ, the testimony of Jesus Christ; Revelation 1:1-2 (KJV) 1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John: 2 Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw.

Revelation 1:9 (KJV) 9 I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.

Revelation 6:9 (KJV) 9 And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:

Revelation 19:13 (KJV) 13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.

Revelation 20:4 (KJV) 4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

Christian, would you be willing to be slain, beheaded, for the word of God and the testimony of the Lord Jesus Christ, should He tarry; or if there is no ‘pre-tribulation rapture’ like so many believe?

~~Now, let’s look at verses that talk about the ‘word of the Lord’…~~

~~The phrase ‘hear the word of the Lord’ occurs 24 times in the KJV Bible; the phrase ‘hear ye the word of the Lord’ occurs 7 times.

Exodus 9:20-21 (KJV)
20 He that feared the word of the LORD among the servants of Pharaoh made his servants and his cattle flee into the houses:
21 And he that regarded not the word of the LORD left his servants and his cattle in the field.

~~Later verses tell of how God spared His judgments upon those who feared His Word; and He will do so today, because Jesus is the Word, and He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

~~Despising God’s word and breaking his commandment go together.

Numbers 15:31 (KJV) 31 Because he hath despised the word of the LORD, and hath broken his commandment, that soul shall utterly be cut off; his iniquity shall be upon him.

1 Samuel 3:1 (KJV) 1 And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision. ~~I am guessing this meant the Lord did not speak to many people much at all; because the priest at the time, Eli, let sin go unpunished in his sons, and he didn’t recognize God was talking to Samuel at first.

1 Samuel 3:7 (KJV) 7 Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him. ~~Since we have the Bible, the Word of the Lord, we can know Him, and He does reveal Himself through His Word. Let us treasure it!

Saul lost his position as king for not heeding God’s word: 1 Samuel 15:23 (KJV) 23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.

Saul wanted to ‘appear’ righteous, but his actions were revealed by God, through the prophet, Samuel;  1 Samuel 15:25-26 (KJV) 25 Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD. 26 And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Israel.

2 Samuel 22:31 (KJV) 31 As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all them that trust in him.

 1 Kings 13:26 (KJV) 26 And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the word of the LORD: therefore the LORD hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake unto him.

1 Chronicles 10:13-14 (KJV) 13 So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to enquire of it; 14 And enquired not of the LORD: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse. {Also note that it was a familiar spirit, not actually Samuel who appeared to Saul.}

2 Chronicles 12:7 (KJV) 7 And when the LORD saw that they humbled themselves, the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah, saying, They have humbled themselves; therefore I will not destroy them, but I will grant them some deliverance; and my wrath shall not be poured out upon Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak.

2 Chronicles 34:20-21 (KJV) 20 And the king commanded Hilkiah, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Abdon the son of Micah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah a servant of the king’s, saying, 21 Go, enquire of the LORD for me, and for them that are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found: for great is the wrath of the LORD that is poured out upon us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the LORD, to do after all that is written in this book.

Psalm 18:30 (KJV) 30 As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him. ~~The Bible truly is the word of God as this verse was also in 2 Sam. 22:31!

Psalm 33:4 (KJV) 4 For the word of the LORD is right; and all his works are done in truth.

Psalm 33:6 (KJV) 6 By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.

~~A promise for those who have been hurt by false teachers: Isaiah 66:5 (KJV) 5 Hear the word of the LORD, ye that tremble at his word; Your brethren that hated you, that cast you out for my name’s sake, said, Let the LORD be glorified: but he shall appear to your joy, and they shall be ashamed.

~~God’s judgment for not hearing His word, but using it falsely:    Jeremiah 6:10-14 (KJV) 10 To whom shall I speak, and give warning, that they may hear? behold, their ear is uncircumcised, and they cannot hearken: behold, the word of the LORD is unto them a reproach; they have no delight in it. 11 Therefore I am full of the fury of the LORD; I am weary with holding in: I will pour it out upon the children abroad, and upon the assembly of young men together: for even the husband with the wife shall be taken, the aged with him that is full of days. 12 And their houses shall be turned unto others, with their fields and wives together: for I will stretch out my hand upon the inhabitants of the land, saith the LORD.13 For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them every one is given to covetousness; and from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely. 14 They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace…Jeremiah 6:19 (KJV) 19 Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not hearkened unto my words, nor to my law, but rejected it.

~~Without the word of the Lord, what wisdom do men have?  Jeremiah 8:8-9 (KJV) 8 How do ye say, We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us? Lo, certainly in vain made he it; the pen of the scribes is in vain. 9 The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken: lo, they have rejected the word of the LORD; and what wisdom is in them?

~~Only 2 verses contain the phrase ‘receive the word’:

{Reference to God’s judgment} Jeremiah 9:20 (KJV) 20 Yet hear the word of the LORD, O ye women, and let your ear receive the word of his mouth, and teach your daughters wailing, and every one her neighbour lamentation.

{Reference to false conversion}Luke 8:13 (KJV) 13 They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.

~~The phrase ‘according to the word of the Lord’ occurs 28 times in the KJV Bible.

~~More verses with ‘the word of the Lord’…

~~Jeremiah was a prophet who was greatly persecuted for speaking the word of the Lord. At one point, he wanted to just keep silent. Notice the progression, as he struggles with his feelings;

Jeremiah 20:7-9 (KJV) 7 O LORD, thou hast deceived me, and I was deceived: thou art stronger than I, and hast prevailed: I am in derision daily, every one mocketh me. 8 For since I spake, I cried out, I cried violence and spoil; because the word of the LORD was made a reproach unto me, and a derision, daily. 9 Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.” Isn’t it so with us, beloved, when we know the Lord wants us to speak the truth from His word, and we try to keep quiet but we just can’t, no matter what the consequences may be? May we never lose this zeal for God’s word!

I love the next verses, after Jeremiah says he ‘could not stay’, could not keep from declaring the word of the Lord, and God’s promise for deliverance; Jeremiah 20:10-13 (KJV) 10 For I heard the defaming of many, fear on every side. Report, say they, and we will report it. All my familiars watched for my halting, saying, Peradventure he will be enticed, and we shall prevail against him, and we shall take our revenge on him.{Isn’t it so with us, how people who despise God’s word try to ‘entice’ us away from it?} 11 But the LORD is with me as a mighty terrible one: therefore my persecutors shall stumble, and they shall not prevail: they shall be greatly ashamed; for they shall not prosper: their everlasting confusion shall never be forgotten. 12 But, O LORD of hosts, that triest the righteous, and seest the reins and the heart, let me see thy vengeance on them: for unto thee have I opened my cause. 13 Sing unto the LORD, praise ye the LORD: for he hath delivered the soul of the poor from the hand of evildoers.

So, beloved, love the Lord, love His word; cherish it, study it, keep it close to your heart, and meditate upon it day and night! Joshua 1:8 (KJV) 8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
